How to Manage Your Online Reputation Using SEO

A high, ethical standard of search engine optimization (SEO) will work to your advantage with respect to managing and enhancing your online reputation.

Andy Beal, from Marketing Pilgrim offers advice for a beginner who may be concerned about his or her online reputation.

Whether you are managing your online reputation personally as an individual, company or organization, ideally, it should be professional and remain untainted. Having and maintaining a good, online reputation is extremely important on a short or long-term basis.

Be aware that whatever you write and post about yourself, for example, your profile, resume, employment information including your company or organization profile, will include key words and key phrases that a spider from a search engine can pick up.

Effective SEO management will give you exposure as a professional web master, web site designer and/or freelance writer. It will portray your reputation in a positive light, which will in turn, reflect your company or organization in a professional manner.

You can enhance your reputation with search engine optimization (SEO),  but be aware that you reap what you sow. Seeds that you plant or have planted in the past, will continue to grow.

Do a quick search on a search engine with your name, company or organization name and see what comes up. If the results are good, there is probably no problem with your online reputation, but if not, you may need to take immediate action to correct any problems or issues of concern that have arisen. You may need to seek professional, webmaster guidance to correct any problems with your reputation.

Be aware that your personal photos, videos, other data or information about you, should portray you, your company or organization accurately. This is an important part of your reputation and should reflect what you want those pictures or information to portray, rather than something released by someone else. An occasional accolade by others can be great and enhance your online reputation.

Checking your web sites and doing frequent updates with respect to your reputation, will help to keep your information accurate and current.

You may have posted online business cards and an e-mail address that offers a link (URL) to other information on personal blogs, social websites or business-oriented web sites. Effective interlinking can help you to establish a solid network and improve your online reputation.

There are key power words and key power phrases that are dynamic in terms of search engine optimization (SEO). Use the key words and key phrases that accurately reflect your thoughts, feelings and desires with respect to blogs, social web sites, as well as business or organization web sites. They should also reflect your moral and ethical standards particularly when it pertains to marketing.

Do not disclose information that others may access in terms of your identity. Always protect your personal identity, including your social security or social insurance number, driver’s license and online banking information. Remember that identity theft is always a possibility, but less likely when you manage your web sites well. Do an occasional check on search engines for anyone else who appears to have the same name or ID. If necessary, contact the authorities.

Always use the same online name to identify yourself as a freelance writer, website designer and/or publisher. This will help to enhance search engine results in respect to your consistency and online reputation. Do not use one name on a web site and a different one on another. You are one person with one name. Use your professional name, the one that others use to identify you correctly. Using more than one version of your name can confuse others; even pen names can be confusing.

Repetition of key search words and key search phrases serve to enhance your online reputation. Link them to your web pages where possible.

Avoid reiteration or replication of other web sites' words or applications, as that is merely reinforcing their search engine results, not yours. Design or create some applications that are truly your own, ones that relate to your name, web site and online reputation. Be unique, but be you. Design your own logo and keep it professional. You may use quotations that others can access, as well. Make certain that they are professional in nature.

Edit your web sites or web pages regularly for possible errors and inappropriate content. Remove inappropriate content as soon as possible, because ideally you want White Hat SEO, not Black Hat SEO ratings.

Check your ratings at intervals to see if there are problems or potential problems in terms of actual numbers. You may be amazed at how many clicks you have received. If your web pages are positive and constructive in nature, others will be  drawn to them and may encourage others to click on them. If your content is not appropriate, you may lose your readership.

Good online reputation management with high SEO standards will serve you well and enhance your reputation.
