A plethora of student nursing opportunities

Student nurses, a plethora of exciting student nursing opportunities awaits you, if you are open to new experiences and ready to enter into unique and interesting academic, nursing related programs.

Do you have the courage to take the steps necessary to explore this unique realm of discovery?

It is time to get excited about advancing your training!

Nurses help nurses. Your nursing instructors, as well as other mentors, who are registered nurses, want you to have the best possible training and experience you can have, prior to your graduation and certification. They will encourage you to expand your nursing horizons, as they know that any extra nursing experience that you can obtain, will help you to succeed as registered nurses.

No student nurse can ever obtain too much nursing experience, but in order to gain experience and attain a degree of expertise in different areas of nursing, it is important for you to pursue student nursing opportunities.

So, when they present themselves, be prepared to take advantage of them. Of course, student nursing opportunities can mean a lot of extra studying and work, but they can be challenging and fun, at the same time. Many new horizons of opportunity for student nurses are suddenly emerging, throughout the world.

Where are they? You may have to do some serious research and inquiry, in order to find them.

Student nurses from many different countries need to advance their student nursing experiences, prior to graduation and certification. They will take advantage of every possible, student nursing opportunity that arises, so there is a degree of urgency with respect to nursing students seeking training opportunities. In other words, act immediately, before the opportunities are gone.

As student nurses, this means that individually and collectively, you may have to step outside of your student nursing shell and become extroverts, instead of introverts. That is not easy for every student nurse, but it is possible. Every time you attempt to do something and succeed, it gets easier for you the next time.

It is important to take advantages of local student nursing opportunities, so contact your local hospitals, nursing homes, retirement homes, community nursing agencies or other health care oriented agencies, to learn about them. Find out if there are outreach programs that student nurses can become involved with in their spare time.

Colleges and universities have far broader outreach horizons than previous nursing schools have ever had.

The global horizon of student nurse opportunities is continually expanding. For example, here are some Canadian opportunities for student nurses. The first two are offered by the Thompson Rivers School of Nursing, in Kamloops, British Columbia. Are you interested in working with native Canadians?

"Current initiatives include the development of an Aboriginal nursing project that has the goals to increase the recruitment and retention of Aboriginal nurses and to enhance the cultural safety and relevance of our curricula. We are excited about working in partnership with the rich diversity of Aboriginal communities in our region." (1)

Or, you may be interested in international, student nursing opportunities.

"The School of Nursing faculty is enriched by its involvement in international initiatives including a project in Nepal, which provided opportunity for students and faculty to go to Nepal, as well as nurses from Nepal have come to Canada. The faculty is interested in pursuing other initiatives including those that offer dynamic study abroad opportunities in nursing and international health." (2)

Student nurses who are interested in a specific area of specialization like oncology nursing, may contact the BC Cancer Agency in Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada.

"The BC Cancer Agency is pleased to support the development of oncology nurses and nursing students. We have a firm belief in the value of learning and its relationship to competency and professional development. Therefore, it is important that we promote learning opportunities for the profession of nursing." (3)

For other students seeking employment as student nurses in community health care, another opportunity in Manitoba, Canada, is offered by the Winnipeg Regional Health Authority.

"Are you a nursing student interested in working in the Winnipeg Regional Health Authority.....while completing your studies?" (4)

Student nurses seeking scholarships in conjunction with employment, may contact Clarian Health, in Indiana, USA, as they offer several options.

"In our ongoing efforts to attract the best and the brightest nurses, Clarian offers scholarships for each semester worked as a student nurse extern (SNE) at one of the three Clarian hospitals....." (5)

Student nurses seeking summer employment may consider contacting Sparrow Nursing, located in Michigan, USA.

"Nursing students currently enrolled in nursing schools who have successfully completed an approved Medical/Surgical clinical (hospital acute care clinical) rotation), may be eligible for Summer Nurse Externships." (6)

Student nurses, there is no shortage of unique student nursing opportunities. Online research will reveal more possible options. Focus on your short and long term nursing goals and then, begin to make serious inquiries, in those directions. Seek the advice of other nursing care professionals, but the final decision will ultimately be yours.

Note that equivalency examinations may be required, if you wish to work in the capacity of another health care giver, like a personal support worker or home care attendant. This is particularly important, if you are opting for temporary employment in a country, other than the one where you are training. No matter where you choose to work or study, you will have to present your student nurse credentials, so keep your grade level high.

There may be other stipulations or requirements with regard to temporary residency, student enrollment or employment, so do your research well in advance. You may require immunization and have to place an application for a passport or obtain a temporary work permit. Find out about housing also.

Student nurses are in demand globally. In other words, the world is waiting for student nurses, as they have already achieved a high level of health care education and training, much needed around the world.

Crisis situations, like the spread of the H1N1 virus, may present unique opportunities for student nurses to
gain experience in infection control. Because of the global economic decline, student nurses may be hired in various capacities, as health care givers on various levels.

Check out nursing journals and magazines for unique student nursing opportunities that have been posted. If you are interested in industrial nursing, make inquiries in that direction. If your area of interest or expertise is pediatrics or obstetrics, look for student nursing opportunities that will provide you with additional health care training for infants and children. Perhaps your preference is nursing research, in an area like genetics.
Make serious inquiries about student nursing openings, in that field of inquiry.

Ask other registered nurses what they have done or may still want to do, in terms of their own personal preferences about nursing opportunities. You may be able to do something with a more experienced nurse in a unique setting of some kind, like remote clinical nursing, in the Arctic or South America.

Become adventurous and you will find an exciting and interesting place to gain more experience as a student nurse. Remember that many of your nursing experiences may qualify as credits towards your nursing degree.

Getting excited about nursing? The world is yours to explore. Wait and see how much fun it is going to be!
